PORTFOLIO 2008

April 12-May 11, 2008
Exhibition opening, awards ceremony and reception
on Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m.

Portfolio is a yearly exhibition, designed to showcase the exemplary art work of middle school and high school students in the Tri-State Area. For students, the experience of exhibiting their work in a museum can be exciting, uplifting and vision-building.

Each year, the art teachers at the schools have the difficult task of selecting only a handful of all of their students' artwork. This can be especially challenging for teachers who have hundreds of students. Once the artwork has been delivered to the museum, it is installed in the galleries. An art professor from Marshall University judges the work each year and grants awards to the 12 best pieces (in his or her opinion): four $25 awards of recognition for middle school students, four $25 awards of recognition to high school students and four $50 awards of excellence for high school students.

HMA hosts an awards ceremony and reception for the students, their families and the art teachers. With much cheering and excitement, the winners are announced at the awards ceremony. Then the judge gives a PowerPoint presentation, which gives the students the opportunity to learn more about art and art making.

Marshall University's College of Fine Arts sponsors Portfolio, making it possible for aspiring art students in the Tri-State Area to have an exhibition experience.
