Documentary film on October 8 at 6 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibit titled Land, Sea, Air: Vistas & Viewpoints, HMA will present the documentary film “HOUSE IN THE CLOUDS: The Artistic Life of Robert Singleton” on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Grace Rardin Doherty Auditorium. Admission is free.

The AmpMediaProject film by Douglas John Imbrogno and Bobby Lee Messer explores the successful career and life experiences of Singleton, who has made his home and studio in Hardy County, W.Va., since 1978. Work by Singleton is included in the Land, Sea, Air: Vistas & Viewpoints exhibit.

“Robert’s life story is a powerful one,” says Imbrogno, the film’s executive producer, writer and narrator. “It is worth telling how such a robust, bright spirit kept his art alive through the fire and forge of so many losses, troubles, and life challenges. The art that resulted is good for the soul. Robert’s story is worth sharing widely.”

The exhibit titled LAND, SEA, AIR: Vistas & Viewpoints continues on view at HMA through Dec. 1, 2024.

“Our collection contains many landscape paintings and images of all kinds that represent the world around us. For this exhibit, we have focused on a limited number of them that, together, play with the definitions of viewpoint,” said John Farley, HMA Senior Curator/Exhibition Designer. “You’ll find some beautifully rendered scenes, as observed and recorded from particular vantage points, and our state and region are emphasized throughout the exhibit.”

In addition to Singleton, artists with works in the exhibit include Childe Hassam, Thomas Doughty, Julie Chen, Sally Gall, Daniel Kaufmann,  and Huntington native Tina Williams Brewer.

This exhibit is presented with support from the City of Huntington Mayor’s Council for the Arts.

This exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment.

This program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
