The Herman P. Dean Firearms Collection is the result of a lifetime of informed and enthusiastic collecting. An avid sportsman, historian, and one of the founders of the Huntington Museum of Art, Herman P. Dean was known internationally for his historic firearms collection and his expertise on the subject.
The Dean Collection traces the use of firearms from the earliest hand cannon through the machine-made weapons of the 19th century. The exhibition focuses on firearms and accouterments of the American frontier. Themes explored in the exhibit include: Craft & History of Early Firearms; Firearms Invention; The Kentucky Rifle; Powder Horns; English Arms in America; Men Who Made the Gun; Gunmaker as Craftsman; Target and Hunting Guns; and Gun Making Tools.
