PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Huntington Museum of Art (HMA) recognizes that for many visitors to HMA being able to photograph their experience and share it with friends via social media, websites and other forms of communication positively enhances their time spent in the galleries. HMA recognizes the need to protect copyright of artists and works on loan from other institutions. HMA recognizes the need to protect art in its care from photography that might cause degradation in the artwork.
Personal-use and recreational photography are permitted in the Huntington Museum of Art’s permanent collection galleries subject to the conditions below. Photography of special exhibitions or works on loan to the Museum is sometimes prohibited by lenders. Photo policies for special exhibitions will be posted in the galleries.
Visitors may:
- Take casual, in-the-moment photos for personal use only.
- Use handheld cameras, cell phones, and tablets with the flash turned off.
- Post images from their visits on personal social media sites so long as they are not used for profit.
Visitors may NOT:
- Use tripods, monopods, supplemental lights, selfie sticks, or other external equipment.
- Sell or publish the images.
- Use the images to promote themselves, any outside product or service.
Visitors must:
- Remain behind stanchions and maintain a safe, non-touching distance from all artwork, cases, platforms, and pedestals.
- Remain on the sidewalk in the Conservatory.
- Respect other visitors enjoying the galleries.
Outdoor Portrait Shoots
Outdoor portrait shoots on Museum grounds do not require an escort or approval; however, you should contact the Museum prior to your visit to ensure that there are no events scheduled.
Please note:
- Outdoor portrait photography must not disrupt Museum operations or visitor experience.
- All photographers and subjects must stay in publicly accessible areas.
- Some outdoor artworks may be under copyright. It is the responsibility of the user to clear any permissions that may be necessary for uses beyond news reporting and commentary. Copyright information will be provided upon request.
Indoor Portrait Shoots
Indoor portrait shoots require an escort and approval. You should contact the Museum prior to your visit to ensure that there are no events scheduled.
Please note:
- Indoor shoots are subject to fees.
- Indoor shoots are allowed only in The Virginia Van Zandt Hall, Virginia Cavendish Courtyard, Decorative Arts Gallery, Daine Gallery Ante Room, and the C Fred Edwards Conservatory.
- Indoor shoots require a Museum staff member escort.
- Photographs must be shot in natural light only. No artificial lights, reflectors, or diffusers are allowed.
- Tripods and monopods are prohibited.
- Floral arrangements must be obtained from a florist.
- Props are prohibited.
- The Museum does not have the facilities to provide for changing clothes and restrooms must be kept available for our guests at all times.
- The Museum’s Security Policies are in effect and cannot be waived.
- Photo shoots require a fee and are limited to two hours, including any setup or hair/makeup time. All restrictions above also apply.
Personal photographs may not be published, sold, or otherwise distributed for commercial purposes.
The Huntington Museum of Art reserves the right to withhold or withdraw permission to photograph on the premises at any time. Huntington Museum of Art staff have the authority to approach and verify the intent of photography anywhere on property and to enforce the Photography Policy.
$50.00 for the first two (2) hours including setup, wardrobe changes and take down.
After 2 hours, $50.00 per hour for any part of the additional hour.
* Additional costs may be charged as determined by the Museum for Security and other staff time.
$25.00 per couple.
No Setup or wardrobe changes.
30 Minute Time Limit per couple
$200.00 for the first two (2) hours including setup, wardrobe changes and take down.
After 2 hours, $100.00 per hour for any part of the additional hour.

*The Huntington Museum of Art is always pleased to provide our Members and Guests with a unique backdrop for photographing your special occasion. Our Associated Fees have been reviewed and are based on fees at similar type venues in the area as well as other Museums in Ohio, Kentucky, & West Virginia. Museum Members may be eligible for discounts based upon their level of Membership with arrangements made at least one (1) week prior to date of photo shoot. Museum Vendors and Advertising Partners should make arrangements with both the Public Relations Director and Development Director to determine if any fees may be charged for your project.
Members of the media and those interested in using the museum for commercial photography and film shoots should make arrangements for all photo and video shoots in advance. To coordinate a shoot, please contact the Public Relations Director.
