The Huntington Museum of Art will present the new exhibit titled In His Nature: Botanical Prints from the Collection of Dr. Marion C. Korstanje from July 27, 2024, through February 9, 2025. This exhibit will be in the spotlight as a 4th Tuesday Tour Event on October 22, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m.
This exhibit is co-curated by HMA Senior Curator/Exhibition Designer John Farley and Josh Hamrick, Director of the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory at HMA.
“From the prodigious collection of more than 250 artworks given to the Museum by the late Dr. Korstanje, 40 botanical prints have been thoughtfully selected for their aesthetic beauty and their contributions to greater scientific understanding of our world,” Farley said.
“Many of these illustrations relate to plant species found in the Conservatory or on the Museum’s hiking trails, thereby making connections between person and place, observation and perception, artmaking and scientific inquiry,” Hamrick said.
Dr. Marion C. Korstanje (1930-2007) was a son of immigrants who came to the United States from the Netherlands to open a bulb and flower business in Sybene, Ohio. A distinguished ophthalmologist, Dr. Korstanje established his practice in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1961, and he served this community for more than 40 years. Dr. Korstanje was a renaissance man who spoke many languages and loved to read, travel, and experience nature. He was also a discerning art collector with an eye for Asian ceramics, natural history, and old master prints. A kind and generous man, Dr. Korstanje gave his time and energy to the Huntington Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees and enriched the Museum’s permanent collection with many gifts of art.
This exhibit is presented In Memory of Dr. Marion C. Korstanje by the Korstanje Family: Barbara Korstanje Loftus; William and Judi Korstanje; Doug and Susan Korstanje; and David and Judy Korstanje.
