MONARCH BUTTERFLY PROJECT

BEAUTY & BEHAVIOR

The monarch butterfly has captivated our imagination for both its beauty and its behavior. It is one of the few insects that migrate long distances. Monarchs fly from Canada to Mexico for the winter. It is fitting then that, as part of our nature interpretation mission, we display their caterpillars and pupa in our conservatory during the late summer months. When the butterflies emerge, we tag them and release them for their flight to Mexico. If the butterfly is caught, the tag will help investigators find out from where the butterfly came. Tagging is done in cooperation with Monarch Watch. This organization was established to obtain and provide information about monarchs and to help the species survive.
