T-SHIRT DESIGN COMPETITION

To Enrich the Lives of All the People

Get ready to showcase your creativity and be part of something special! The Huntington Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the 2024 T-Shirt Design Competition, inviting artists of all ages to capture the essence of the phrase so near and dear to HMA: “To Enrich the Lives of All the People.” Whether you’re a young artist or an experienced designer, this is your chance to have your artwork featured on T-shirts sold in our Museum Store, make a lasting impact on our community, and help us celebrate so many years of making art, education, and nature accessible to all. With amazing prizes, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss!

Age Groups:

  1. Youth 5-17
  2. Adult 18-older

Prizes:

  • One winning design from each age group will be screen printed on T-shirts and sold in the Museum Store.
  • The winner of each age group gets their design on a free shirt for themself and up to four immediate family members in their selection of sizes.
  • Winning designs published on HMA’s website and social media platforms (Facebook & Instagram)!
  • Creativity Level Museum Membership ($25 value, valid for the winner and up to four immediate family members for 12 months). This includes free Museum Admission and 10% off in the Museum Store for all listed on the card!
  • $500 cash prize.

Rules:

  1. Contestants must reside within 50 miles of the Huntington Museum of Art.
  2. Contestants must submit a completed form (see attached) and design to Museum Store Manager Mollie Ashworth via email [email protected] no later than 11:59pm on Friday, September 27th, 2024.
  3. Four finalists will be chosen from each age group by a panel of judges, then the eight designs will be posted on the Huntington Museum of Art’s Facebook page on Monday, October 7th, 2024, for community voting via “likes” or “reactions.” It will be possible for a single person to vote for more than one favorite in each category. One design with the most “reactions” in each age group by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 13th, 2024, will be the winner. The winners will then be officially announced on the HMA Instagram and Facebook pages. The results will not be final until posted by HMA..
  4. Contestants must submit a high-quality photo or a scan (PDF, JPEG, or PNG format no larger than 20 MB) of their original art – designs made with A.I. will be disqualified.
  5. Design should be created with either a physical or digital medium.
  6. Designs may not include profanity, adult references, trademarks, logos from other organizations, or copyrighted works.
  7. The design must fit the theme The Huntington Museum of Art: “To Enrich the Lives of All the People.”
  8. The design must utilize no more (but can use less) than 5 solid colors, white and black included. If only four colors are used, all four colors will be printed on the shirt. If five colors are used, one of the colors will be chosen as the t-shirt color, therefore still only needing 4 colors to be printed. The Museum Store partnered with Mountain Mindful retains the right to alter or choose the final shirt color..
  9. Avoid gradients or shading. Screen printing works best with distinct, solid colors rather than gradients or shades. Think of how traditional cartoons are drawn, with bold, clear lines and colors.
  10. Consider line thickness. Ensure that lines are not too thin, as very fine details will not print well.
  11. Design must be formatted in a vertical rectangular form, with the length being two inches longer than the width. The final design will be no larger than 11”x13” on the shirts. The design doesn’t have to fill up the entire space but consider that this will be scaled and printed on the front of t-shirts in varying sizes and must be able to keep details intact.
  12. By entering, the artist is granting the Huntington Museum of Art exclusive rights to the design, including any modifications.  They are also granting the Huntington Museum of Art the use of their design, free of charge, for all printing, merchandise, and promotional purposes.
